Interviews are stressful situations and once an employer has finished questioning you on your educational and career achievements to date, its then your chance to turn the spotlight on your potential employer.
As the interview draws to a close its likely you’ll be asked whether you have any questions you’d like to ask. Whilst it can be tempting to run for the door, now the most stressful part of the process is over, taking the time to question your interviewer not only gives you a chance to show you’ve done your research on the company but also allows you to work out whether this really is the job and company for you.
If you’re stuck for questions to ask your future employer we’ve put together some of the best questions to pitch so that you won’t be stuck next time you’re asked.
What Does a Typical Day Look Like?
You may have read the job description but it will rarely describe what your typical day to day duties will look like in the role. This gives the employer the opportunity to explain the role in more detail and put it into the context of your 9 to 5.
It will also allow you to delve deeper into the job and understand how the role fits into the wider company. If you’re moving from one job to another, you’ll be able to compare duties to your previous role and look at the challenges which may come up day to day.
How would you describe the Culture here?
A better working culture is becoming an increasingly important part of everyone’s work life as we strive for a better working environment. Ensuring you, as a potential employee, are a good fit for the company during the interview process is often a high priority for an employer.
Enquiring about the culture in the workplace will allow you to show an interested in the company outside of your job role and show you are actively seeking a positive workplace culture. It will also give the employer the chance to share more about its current employees and tell you what it’s really like to work at the company.
You’ve recently worked with this client/project. What’s next for you?
This questions allows you to show that you’ve done your research on the company you’re up to date with the latest clients and projects they may have worked on. Not only will this win you some brownie points with your future employer but will also give them chance to share what’s next in the pipeline.
Showing your interest in the future growth of the company will show you’re ready to help them grow too and will give you some idea as to what your employer envisions for the future of the business.
What’s the Next Step?
Perhaps one of the most important questions you can ask is the next step in the interview process. Asking this will show your ready to move forwards and provide a good closing statement to the interview and give you peace of mind.
It’ll also give the employer the chance to share the next step in the process. If an initial job offer isn’t made after the first interview, this may take the form of a second interview or be a task you’ll need to complete. Either way, asking this question it’ll give you a chance to prepare for what’s next.
